February 26, 2026

A family-owned salmon producer in Norway

Based in Stokmarknes, Nordlaks has established itself as a prominent figure in Norway’s salmon production landscape, boasting an impressive legacy spanning over three decades. Their unwavering commitment to Arctic regions exclusively underscores their dedication to providing uncompromised, 100% Arctic-quality Norwegian salmon.

Nordlaks Norwegian Salmon Family

As a responsible supplier, Nordlaks has gained recognition for their pioneering spirit and innovative contributions to the industry. As a family-owned enterprise, Nordlaks exercise complete

control over the entire value chain, commencing with egg production and culminating in the market distribution. This integrated approach empowers the company to continually innovate and optimize efficiency throughout the production process, all while maintaining focus on sustainability.

Nordlaks will develop the company, contribute to the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry, and Northern Norway which is their home.

Committed to quality

Nordlaks’ fully integrated value chain, combined with the pristine Arctic environment, positions them to produce salmon of superior quality consistently.

Due to its great taste and quality, Nordlaks’ salmon has triumphed five years in a row in the prestigious taste test ”Sabor Del Año” in Spain. This recurring victory underscores the resounding success of their innovative approach and focus  on delivering superior quality consistently.

Focus on innovative and sustainable salmon production

Smolt facilities

Nordlaks has a strong focus on sustainability and innovation, and a great example of this is their new smolt facility. Nordlaks has implemented groundbreaking advancements in smolt production to minimize energy consumption, both in terms of water and ele-ctricity. The company has made substantial investments in the po-wer infrastructure at two of their three smolt facilities, resulting in the generation of 10 GWh of electricity in 2022 alone, accounting for nearly half of the company’s total consumption of 25 GWh. The newest smolt facility is equipped with cutting-edge technology, enabling water recycling (RAS) to reduce electricity usage for water heating. In the production processes, substantial air is consumed, yet Nordlaks ensures that all heat generated is effectively recycled, with wastewater being repurposed for biogas production. Furthermore, Nordlaks is actively planning to replace outdated technologies in their oldest facility with innovative solutions.

Wellboats

In 2021, Nordlaks made a strategic transition from diesel-powered wellboats to a more ecologically friendly and energy-efficient alternative: Hybrid wellboats running on both LNG and electricity. These modern wellboats use LNG as their main power source, with backup batteries the company can use if they need more power in short periods of time. Importantly, the new LNG wellboats offer expanded loading capacities, optimizing fish transport and resulting in significant energy savings. Nord-laks is currently in the planning stages of establishing shore power stations to facilitate electrified unloading processes and ensure fully charged batteries for subsequent journeys. Their vessels can tap into up to 1000 kW of shore power.

Fish health

The overarching objective of Nordlaks is to innovate and reduce their reliance on pharmaceuticals and minimize emissions during lice eradication efforts. Nordlaks prioritize not using pharma-ceuticals in their lice management, thereby mitigating potential adverse environmental impacts.

The Ocean Farm & The Ocean Tank

The Ocean Farm ”Jostein Albert” represents a monumental innovation and development endeavor initiated by Nordlaks in 2015. This initiative was conceived as part of a broader innovation and development program initiated by Norwegian authorities, aimed at accelerating technological progress within the country’s aquaculture sector. Notably, Nordlaks was a pioneering applicant for development permits and among the first to embark on this ambitious project. The Ocean Farm serves as a vital conduit for harnessing previously inaccessible areas.

In addition to the Ocean Farm, Nordlaks has invested in another innovative project to increase their salmon farming sustainably: The Ocean Tank ”Storbåtsegga”.  Designed as a semi-closed production tank, it has been conceptualized to combat salmon lice and prevent disease transmission within the fish population. This groundbreaking concept leverages the favorable conditions for salmon production in Norway and incorporates advanced technology to address environmental challenges related to lice. The Ocean Tank represents a sustainable and effective solution that will benefit both the salmon farming industry and the well-being of the salmon.

It is worth noting that both The Ocean Farm and The Ocean Tank operate on electricity. An impressive 88% of Nordlaks` conventional pens are electrically powered, with the remaining 12% relying on diesel due to limited grid infrastructure availability at the locations.

More than just a factory

Nordlaks has taken strategic steps to vertically integrate their operations, encompassing the slaughterhouse, fillet factory, and the recent establish-ment of their own box factory. These facilities represent the culmination of Nordlaks’ value chain, with the final stage being the meticulous packaging of their salmon products.
